Midwifery Services Initiative

The "Midwifery Services initiative" in India aims to create a new cadre of midwives titled "Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery" (NPM), "who are skilled in accordance with ICM competencies, knowledgeable, and capable of providing compassionate women-centered reproductive, maternal, and new-born health services" (RMNCHA+N). The programme also seeks to develop an enabling environment for the integration of this cadre into the public health system in order to achieve the SDGs for maternal and new-born health. It is heartening to share that Odisha has already initiated the NPM programme in May 2022 and aims to upscale the numbers of NPMs in the state through the State Midwifery Training Institute, which is established in the College of Nursing and situated in three Medical College Hospitals at SCB MCH Cuttack MKCG MCH Berhampur & VIMSAR Burla with 30 seats academic year intake capacity. The 18 months residential training program, totally funded by National Health Mission Odisha through NHM PIP. All SMTIs are affiliated with the Odisha Nurses and Midwifery Council. Registration of NPMs and midwifery educators will be done by the state Nursing council. The step initiated by Health & Family welfare Department Govt. of Odisha will support enhancing the capacity of the nursing officers and further help in providing a respectful maternity to all pregnant women in the state.
