1. Introduction

The Millennium Development Goals (MDG 4 & 5) focus on improving maternal and child health by reducing MMR, IMR, NMR and TFR. Strengthening the health care delivery system with technically competent providers is essential for quality RMNCH services.

Capacity building, skill acquisition, retraining, structured CNE/CME programs and better infrastructure are critical to ensure universal coverage, equity and quality health services.

2. Overview

Skills Labs are structured skill stations where trainees practice on mannequins, simulation exercises and demonstrations to improve RMNCH service quality.

3. Objectives of Establishing Skills Lab
  • Facilitates acquisition and reinforcement of standardized technical skills.
  • Ensures availability of skilled personnel at health facilities.
  • Improves quality of pre-service training and Continuing Nursing Education.
  • Institutionalizes use of SOPs and technical protocols.
  • Provides repetitive hands-on practice under supervision.
4. Setting up of Skills Lab
  • Designate District Nodal Officer (DNO).
  • Select suitable hospital / nursing institute location.
  • Provide interactive training using videos & hands-on practice.
  • Establish Basic and Add-on skill stations.
  • Link Skills Lab with District Hospital for exposure visits.
5. Prerequisites for Skills Lab
  • Model Labour Room with SOP-based practice.
  • Minimum 1000 sq.ft hall + 300 sq.ft seminar room.
  • Net connectivity, power backup, lighting & ventilation.
  • Accommodation for 16 trainees.
  • Procurement of mannequins & equipment.
  • Recruitment of trainers.
  • Regular monitoring & reporting.
6. Human Resource
  • 4 Dedicated Trainers (1 MBBS + 3 Nursing Staff)
  • 1 Data Entry Operator
  • 1 Grade IV Multipurpose Worker
  • Selection as per GOI TOR & NRHM guidelines
